Thanksgiving 2006

It's come and gone again, traditions intact. Here are the highlights:

1) Best food? How can we choose from among the arrival evening's soups and breads, the T-giving dinner itself (though the low-tech Amish turkey didn't have the red pop up button to signal done-ness nor did it have the full complement of gibblets), Ruberad's sweet fruit salad, the Troyer's pies, or the end-of-weekend Mexican restaurant fare today?

2) Best movie? That's between "Flushed Away," which despite its title which nearly made me nix the outing, is a funny funny film from the Wallace and Gromit folks and the DVD series Chloe brought--this year's iteration of Superman was the first season of Smallville.

3) Most fun and inclusive game? By far and away "Imagine-iffs," which Julie and Jon brought to our soup and breads and games night. Karen could participate fully in it with the rest of us, making its silliness even more silly and memorable.

4) Best use of time? Raking the back yard one more time and bagging the leaves into seven giant-economy sized trash bags, hopefully for the last time this season. Between the students' raking and Friday, many more had come down. (If only our neighbor had raked his before the pickup date, but no such luck.) And also in the running, Chloe's getting all her prayer letters and Christmas cards assembled and ready to mail. That woman is one efficient machine!! She does this every year during our Thanksgivings.

5) Craziest use of time? Chuck golfing twice (the weather turned warm-ish just in time...last of the season) AND Jenny, our gal who HATES to shop, going to Best Buy on Black Friday to buy a computer to replace the one that is in its death throes. There she met a salesman from our church who walked her through her options (already narrowed down by internet searches) and helped her bypass the crowds waiting in line to pay for their Christmas goodies. She even came home smiling instead of shopping-grumpy. And then there's Ellen who flew to London for a wedding and some shopping at Camden Market for the weekend :):) That's pretty crazy but oh so worth it.

6) Most to be thankful for? God's blessings are abundant, but particularly at Thanksgiving, we appreciate this chance to be with those we love....

    Two more categories:

    7) Most missed: students around the table. None (of the internatioanls) whom we invited were able to come this year.

    8) Worst holiday traffic: A huge traffic jam as we returned from seeing Karen off at the airport tonight. It took two hours to make what is normally a one hour drive.
