Kids (and Kids at Heart) Say the Darndest Things

Karen has a new sweetheart. (She thinks it's more than that, but how we handle those desires is a story for another day.) Tomorrow night she and Mike and lots of other graduates of the Christian Learning Center are going to attend the CLC's annual semi-formal banquet. She is going to wear the sparkly purple dress purchased for her cousin Emily's wedding; Mike is going to wear a tux! Excitement is running high. She told me during our evening phone call last night that she has butterflies in her stomach. "How can butterflies get into your stomach?" asked one of her literalist housemates. "Silly," she said, "That's just an expression." I laughed and (always the English teacher) said, "Yes, we call that expression a metaphor." "Oh, mom," she replied, "Did you have a lot of metaphors at your wedding?"
