Symbol of Belonging

We now have a mailbox at Church of the Servant (complete with a box of offering envelopes tucked into it). Seven and a half months from our first walking into the church to hear someone call Chuck's name to having a box and quite regular invitations out for lunch after church as well as opportunities for meaningful service that could mushroom to take up all our time. Not bad. In fact, wonderful, given the reputation for ingrown indifference to newcomers that G.R. has. We haven't found it to be the case. We will join the church this spring.

Is the CRC still (maybe it never was) a full subscriptionist church? It seems to me that both you and Chuck disagree with the three forms of unity in a few critical spots.

I guess we'll find out when we take the membership classes this spring. Our impression is that COS at least is a pretty broad tent. Oh, I should tell you that I gave Jack Roada some insight into his Jonah text that he hadn't gotten on his own last Sunday. Great symbiosis because it was his excellent sermon that gave me the idea (that Jonah is another representation of an Elder Brother from the Prodigal Son story.) Our little neck of the woods is all abuzz over the P.S. art show right now.

At least I can spell my pastor's name right: Roeda.

COS may desire to be a pretty broad tent but aren't they in the CRC and therefore bound to adhere to the tent size of the CRC?

My impression is that the Jonah story points to Christ and not so much to the PS. (At least that was Christ's impression. The bible is about Jesus, not us).

I assume so, but I guess we'll find out in a couple of months.
As for the Jonah/PS resonance: of course Jonah points to Christ, which is why it shouldn't be surprising to discern something of the PS story in it as well since PS is about Christ's offer of salvation. Can't wait to hear Kenneth Bailey preach at COS this Sunday, my favorite author of Jacob and the Prodigal and The Cross and the Prodigal.

Bruce, I asked Jenny about what she had to subscribe to when she joined her CRC and she said that when she joined, they announced it and had her stand up so everyone could say "Hi," and only afterwards did they ask for her transfer papers--from a PCA church, administration not being the strong suit of that church's leadership....
